Never before seen David Bowie photographs

As David Bowie is currently undergoing yet another metamorphosis, I thought I’d share some of my photographs from an earlier and favourite incarnation – Ziggy Stardust.

Not forgetting the man behind the sound, the late, great and sorely missed Mick Ronson.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Taken at Newcastle City Hall a long, long time ago.

  1. fantastic pics – saw Bowie ‘doing’ Ziggy at Glasgow’s Greens’ Playhouse – I was 12

    remember this look so well

  2. Thank you for these pictures. I was there! In centre of row H, 8/6/73 – the date is etched into my soul.
Are these from the first or second show that night?

    • Hi John, Thanks for the kind comment. To be honest I can’t remember if it was the 6pm or the 7.30pm show. I would guess at the latter as it was a Friday and not a school night (I was 17 at the time) I do remember going with 2 friends and getting the bus to Newcastle from Ashington, sitting on the aisle in the stalls about half way back. It took a while for me to pluck up courage to make a little foray to the front to take the first photograph, I then kept returning to my seat and making dashes to snap some more by which time the front of the stage was about 10 deep in adoring fans. A great concert.

The City Hall was the scene of many great gigs I saw: The Who, Wishbone Ash, ELP, several Lindisfarne Christmas shows and several Glam Rockers that I’d prefer not to mention, including Gary Glitter (what was I thinking!)

  3. Hi Mel. I’m an author currently working on a UK youth fashion scenes history book called The Bag I’m. I’ve been admiring your extremely fab Bowie pics and would absolutely love to include one or two of them in my book if anyway possible. Let me know what you think when you get a mo
    Kind regards

    • Hi Sam,
Thank you for getting in touch. Yes, I’d be glad to help, can you let me have a few more details about your book: a synopsis would be useful, who is the publisher, what sort of timescale are you working with and which shots you might want to use?

I look forward to hearing from you

      Best Regards

      Mel

      • Hi Mel
Thanks for getting back to me and i’m thrilled you’re considering contributing a couple of your awesome Bowie pics. You’d be fully credited of course.
The Bag I’m In will be published by north London independent Cicada Books in September and goes to print in May. Cicada also published my last book A Scene In Between which focussed on the sartorial aspects of the UK 80’s indie rock scenes. TBII is covering a far broader timespan from 1961-91 looking at UK youth fashions that were derived from music scenes. It’ll include hundreds of previously unpublished photos from peoples personal archives of artists and individuals from all the eras.
Ideally i’d love to include the top shot you have here with bowie leaning forward, the close up shot below that one and perhaps the second from last pointing pose.
Let me know what you think. I have a couple of spare copies of Scene and could send you one this week to give you an idea of the kind of book i produce.
        All the best
        Sam
